John V. Henley. John V. Henley is a native son of Portland, OR. He has worked in the new, used and rare book business since 1967, starting out as a teenage book-scout for Cal’s Books and Wares in downtown Portland. He is perhaps best known for his work on the management team for what was at the time a small bookstore of 6 employees, including the owner, located on West Burnside Street. During his time at Powell’s, the store grew to five locations and over 200 employees. John then became a partner in the Great Northwest Bookstore, at the time, where he issued catalogues, bought and sold rare books as well as all manner of printed or handwritten collectibles including photographs, vintage maps, autographs, documents, manuscripts, and archives.
